Article SPOTLIGHT: Chronic Condition

The January issue of the Manna is centered around the theme of guilt. It’s a feeling that we all deal with, and sometimes struggle to get rid of. The burden of guilt is often intensified when you are a Christian. Even though we know that we are forgiven and have been redeemed by Jesus, the weight of our past sins can haunt and hinder our walk with Christ.

The article Chronic Condition by Karen Tull exemplifies the personal turmoil that guilt can cause. Tull tells a story of a college friend whose self-condemnation caused her to walk away from the faith:

“She couldn’t escape the voice inside her head. If people only knew the things you’ve done, they would reject you. You’ll never be one of them, so stop fooling yourself. I know what you’re really like. I saw what you did at those parties. I saw you get drunk time and time again. I saw you with each of those guys. How could anyone, especially God, love you after all that? Just face it–you’ll never be good enough.”

The mental battle of the college friend, who is left nameless in the article, brings  moments of introspection and confession on how we can constantly belabor past and current mistakes. The article goes on to assure readers that Christ died for ALL our sins and encourages believers to live a guilt-free life.
